Born2Run Athletics Club – Built From Passion

In 2013, David and Ann started a local running club in Johannesburg called Born2Run. The reason was simple, to have a 3-tiered approach to facilitate the improvement of all athletes. Development of youth runners, fostering a social community and inspiring the next generation of elite level athletes.

Born2Run soon spread its footprint to East London, Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria. A development team was also started in Soweto. Within the first year, Born2Run won the ladies team prize at the Comrades Marathon, beating Nedbank Running Club.

From the outset, Born2Run was never intended to be an elite-only environment. Instead, the club was founded on the belief that every runner, regardless of pace, age, or experience, deserves structure, support so that they could thrive and excel. David and Ann Ashworth recognised a gap in the local running landscape – a need for a club that could blend purposeful training with aspirational outlook so that athletes could perform at their best. Their combined experience, leadership, and love for the sport laid the foundation for what Born2Run would become.

In its early days, Born2Run Athletics Club consisted of a small group of like-minded runners meeting regularly to train, learn, and motivate one another. These early sessions were driven by consistency rather than scale, and by progress rather than pressure. As runners began to improve, complete races, and achieve personal milestones, word spread organically. The club’s reputation grew not through marketing, but through results, relationships, and a strong sense of identity.

David and Ann Ashworth remain central figures in the club’s story. Their leadership has shaped Born2Run’s values, standards, and direction since day one. Their commitment to integrity, consistency, and community has ensured that the club grew significantly.

Over time, Born2Run Athletics Club has also played a role in the broader running community. Through participation in local events, support of fellow clubs, and encouragement of grassroots running, Born2Run has contributed positively to the sport at both club and community level. The club’s presence is recognised not only for performance, but for sportsmanship and inclusivity. Around 2015, David and Ann handed over the reigns at Born2Run to pursue other running endeavours.
